Abubeker Hassen is an associate professor in ruminant Nutrition and Pasture Science at the Department of Animal Science, University of Pretoria. He obtained his BSc and MSc Agric degree in Animal Science in 1990 and 1997, respectively. He completed his PhD in Agric. in Pasture Science in 2006 at the University of Pretoria. Prior to this he was a researcher at Bako Research Centre (from 1990-1994) and Adami Tulu Research Centre (from 1997-2002) in Ethiopia. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Animal Science, University of Pretoria from April 2006 to February 2007 and was a lecturer at the Department of Animal Science, North-West University in South Africa from March to July 2007 where he taught courses in agricultural ecology, introduction to grazing management and pasture management. Abubeker Hassen joined the University of Pretoria in August 2007 as a Senior Lecturer and promoted to Associate Professor in January 2018. He is lecturing introduction to animal nutrition, and nutrition sciences at University of Pretoria. Since 2007. He has graduated 19 PhD and 25 MSc students as a supervisor or co-supervisor of students affiliated to his projects. Currently, he is supervising and/or co-supervising 8 MSc and 9 PhD students. He has extensively collaborated with researchers in Africa, Europe, America and Australia. He is a sub-editor of African Journal of Range and Forage Sciences, and served in various occasions as the South African Journal of Animal Sciences sub-editor on ad hoc basis. In addition, he is an advisory board of Ethiopian Journal of Animal Production and member of the reviewer’s board for Animals. He has hosted four postdoctoral fellows and authored or co-authored more than 101 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and presented more than 70 oral and/or poster presentations. He holds C2 rating from NRF in 2020.
