Dr. Nelson O. Huerta-Leidenz is an Emeritus Professor of Universidad del Zulia (LUZ), Venezuela, and currently works as a Research Aide at the Department of Animal and Food Sciences (Texas Tech University). He earns a Veterinary Medicine degree from LUZ, and Master of (Animal) Science, and Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. He started his research career at the Agricultural Research Institute-Zulia State (Venezuela) and became the coordinator of beef cattle research projects in Zulia State. Later he joined the Agronomy faculty of LUZ and served as a full-time tenured Professor at LUZ for 25 years. Thereafter he worked for the U.S. Meat Export Federation in Venezuela and became Regional Director of Technical Services in Mexico. His main research interests have been animal growth, meat yield and quality of large ruminant species, meat grading (beef, buffaloes and pork), meat processing, meat marketing, and meat nutrient composition. Nelson and his colleagues and graduate students have generated 112 refereed journal articles, edited 4 books, authored or coauthored 11 book chapters, and other contributions (e.g., educational videos). Nelson has served as a member of publishing committees of different scientific journals and a referee of some international journals. He has lectured at 113 conferences, trade seminars and technical talks for continuing education in 16 countries, 38 of them by express invitation. Dr. Huerta has been an active member of the American Meat Science Association (AMSA) for several years, serving on the International committee. Nelson was a co-founder and President of the Mexican Meat Science and Technology Association (2014-2016). He is a lifetime member of the Venezuelan Meats Advisory Committee of the Venezuelan Ministry of Agriculture and was awarded an Honorary Membership of the Venezuelan Beef Council. He has been recognized by the AMSA (2010 International Lectureship Award) and Mexican Meat Council (2015 Academic Merit Award).
