PSII-28 - Effect of oat variety and oat type (feed-type vs milling-type) with multi-year samples on energy profiles and predicted animal production performance in western Canada

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of oat variety and oat type (feed-type vs milling type) on energy profiles and predicted animal production performance. The recent oat varieties in this study were provided by Crop Development Center, including Arborg (Milling), Haymaker (Forage type), Nasser (Feed-type), and Summit (Milling type) grown in university crop research fields for three consecutive years. The energy values of oats were determined using a NRC summary approach (NRC, 2001). The production performance was estimated using feed milk value based on net energy for lactation in lactation dairy cows. The experiment design was a RCBD. The data was analyzed using mixed model procedure of SAS with the oat varieties as a fixed effect and the years as a random block effect. Multi-treatments comparison was used Tukey methods. The comparison between milling-type oat and feed-type oat was used contrast of SAS. The results showed that the oat variety had significant differences (P < 0.05) in total digestible nutrient (TDN), metabolizable energy at a production level (ME_p3x), net energy for lactation at a production level (NE_Lp3x) (NRC, 2001); net energy for maintenance (NE_m) and net energy for gain (NE_g) with higher values (P < 0.05) in Nasser (TDN: 81.84 % DM; NE_Lp3x:1.81 Mcal/kg; NE_g: 1.31 Mcal/kg) and lower values (P < 0.05) in Arborg (TDN: 76.62 %DM, NE_Lp3x: 1.68 Mcal/kg; NE_g: 1.20 Mcal/kg) and Haymaker (TDN: 76.86 % DM, NE_Lp3x: 1.68 Mcal/kg; NE_g=1.19 Mcal/kg). The feed milk value was also higher (P < 0.05) in Nasser (2.60 kg milk/kg feed) than that in Arborg (2.41 kg milk/kg feed) and Haymaker (2.40 kg milk/kg feed). Compared between the milling-type oat and feed-type oat, the feed-type oat had higher energy values and feed milk value than the milling-type oat. In conclusion, the oat varieties and oat-types differed in energy values and feed milk value.
